The Unfortified Military Villages of Sir Harry Smith by Prof. Colin Coetzee describes the circumstances which led to the beginning of the 7th Frontier War of 1850. This 80 page book details the forgotten short-lived villages in the Eastern Cape of Woburn, Auckland, Juanesburg and Ely; including the two villages for ‘brown’ soldiers of Hardinge and Kempt. In addition, there are two appendices extracted from Wilfred Brinton’s History of the British Regiments in South Africa 1795-1895 which add to the horror of the massacre that took place.
The book is out of print. However, it has been reproduced in the Forts of the Eastern Cape book.
